Vagus nerve, also called the wandering nerve, is one of the most significant organs of the human body, transmitting signals from the enteric nervous system to the central nervous system and vice versa. This multitalented nerve is responsible for regulating numerous reflex actions, such as coughing, sneezing, swallowing, and vomiting. It is a critical component of the parasympathetic nervous system, which is the soothing counterpart of the fight-or-flight sympathetic nervous system.
Importance of Vagus Nerve:
The vagus nerve looks like a plant’s root system, growing downwards from the brain. It transfers sensory information to the brain stem from our organs, including the gut. While this nerve sounds like it is just one whole nerve, in reality it comprises of two parts - one traversing the left side of the body and another on the right. Being the longest and most complex of the cranial nerves, this vagus nerve is like a one-stop communication hotspot of the human body. Since it links the brain with all essential organs like - abdomen, heart, lungs, liver, kidney, stomach, large & small intestines - the vagus nerve plays the role of a connecting express highway in our body.

It is essential to realise that, we are in talking terms with our brain on a daily basis only because of this crucial vagus nerve. So stimulating this nerve is known to treat various health conditions including anxiety disorders, chronic depression, inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and many others. It is important to note that a damaged vagus nerve impacts numerous digestive functioning and can cause gastroparesis, a condition where the stomach cannot properly evacuate food.
